Evaluation of the Lesson Plan: Analyzing Love: A Study of Elizabeth Barrett Browning’s Sonnet

Alignment to Standards:
Yes, the lesson aligns well with the CCSS ELA  standards:

RL.9-10.4 (Word Meaning): Addressed through figurative language analysis.
RL.9-10.5 (Structure): Addressed through examination of rhyme, meter, and tone.
RL.9-10.9 (Comparative Analysis): Central to the essay assignment connecting the sonnet to a modern work.

The lesson plan meets ISTE Standard 2.5 by offering more personal, student-driven activities that accommodate diverse needs. It aligns with 2.5.a by allowing students to choose a modern work of fiction for their comparative essay, creating a level of independence and individual interests. It also supports 2.5.b by including authentic learning tasks, such as literary analysis and creative expression, while encouraging the use of digital tools.
I feel that this lesson plan is well-structured, and clearly designed for some high school students. It incorporated textual analysis, critical thinking, and dissection which align with the CCSS for New Mexico. Overall, the lesson does require higher-order thinking skills because the students have to interpret, compare, and apply Browning's literary concepts to more modern concepts. This is especially true since the students have to write a comparative essay supporting their analysis of various texts. I like how the lesson plan is organized and easy to follow. It starts with the introduction and ends with a conclusion or expected outcome. Using tools like Magic School could really come in handy, and I remember when we literally had to type everything out by hand—Magic School provides a very good outline. That being said, it should mostly be used as an outline, and teachers should personalize it to meet their own students' needs. I don’t see any differentiation strategies, which is something teachers always have to include.

What could be different?

Clearer Rubric for Assessment: Add or reference a rubric to clarify expectations for the essay.

Create a list of suggestion of more modern text( it would make it easier for students to generate ideas and get a head start)

Provide a bit more background information on the Victorian era or who Elizabeth was.
Students should review rough drafts.

In regards to how it connects with what we’ve been reading in class, I’d say that it explores the advantages of technology use, its strength and weakness.

Part 2: AI Tool Interaction on Magic School

The AI-powered tool I chose on Magic School was the Choice Board (UDL) Generator. This tool creates differentiated choice boards based on Universal Design for Learning (UDL) principles, allowing students to choose how they engage with a lesson topic and demonstrate their understanding. It offers a variety of activity types—visual, written, creative, tech-based—that support multiple learning styles and promote student autonomy.

I found this tool extremely interesting because it makes differentiation manageable and engaging. For example, in a lesson on Elizabeth Barrett Browning’s “How Do I Love Thee?”, I could use the choice board to offer creative and analytical options: students might create visual art, write a diary entry, or record a podcast comparing the poem to a modern work. I would use this tool both during instruction to support learning and as a form of assessment to check for understanding.

Part 3: Reflection

I would definitely use Magic School in my classroom. The Choice Board Generator helps make lessons more engaging, and student-centered. It saves planning time while still offering high-quality, differentiated instruction that aligns with learning goals. I believe it’s a great tool for both new and experienced teachers who want to support diverse learners without being overwhelmed. Some challenges could include students feeling overwhelmed by too many choices or lacking access to technology needed for certain tasks. Additionally, some AI-generated options might require tweaking for alignment with specific standards. Despite these concerns, the benefits far outweigh the negatives.

Comments

  1. I agree that it is quite useful for creating certain things to appeal to diverse learners. Oftentimes the challenge many teachers face is creating our own content to fit they needs of each student. AI gives us a reprieve. We still must hold ourselves responsible to the outcome in the end.

  2. Teyana, that was a great post! I am glad to learn from you that the choice board generator is a great tool. Finding digital, engaging, student-centered lessons can sometimes be hard. I am glad to know there is a tool out there that I can use.
