Chapter 5, in the textbook “How People Learn” helps us understand the evolution of the learning process. Most importantly, how the learning process changes depending on age and other influences. There are several factors that influence learning (besides age) like brain development, cognitive abilities and also external influences such as cultural and socioeconomic status. These contributing factors affect memory, how a person learns and overall intellectual growth, but educators can help students thrive in a learning environment by integrating technology, creativity and scientifically backed strategies.  In the text referenced above, “How People Learn,” some learning strategies referenced are retrieval practice, which is when a student is re-calling information. This strategy strengthens memory and improves future retrieval. Studies show it enhances learning across different age groups and subjects. Next, is Spaced Practice, teachers distribute learning sessions over a particular s...

BLOG 2 AIW: Enhancing students experiences and education.

Authentic Intellectual Work: Enhancing Education with technological integration, and meaningful instruction.  As educators, it’s very important for us  to evaluate the ways in which we approach teaching, learning, and assessment in order to ensure that students are fully engaged and prepared for the challenges of the real world. Authentic Intellectual Work (AIW) provides educators with a helpful framework for creating teaching practices that will deepen students' understanding and critical thinking. AIW differs from some traditional methods because it puts emphasis on higher-order thinking, and real-world applications. Part 1: Understanding Authentic Intellectual Work In the text Authentic Intellectual Work, as described by Newmann et al. (2007), it states, “Authentic” is used here not to suggest that students are always unmotivated to succeed in conven-tional academic work, or that basic skills and proficiencies should be devalued, but only to identify some kinds of in...

Part 1: Introduction Hello everyone! My name is Te'yana, and I am excited to embark on this journey with you all. Currently, I am  a full time art teacher. This week actually. My professional goals include  to keep teaching art, creative writing, and one day possibly teach creative writing in higher ed.  Part 2: ISTE Standards and Learning Activity After reviewing the ISTE standards for students, I am more receptive towards the  empowered learning  standard.  Within this standard, I'd want to focus on encouraging students to use technology to take an active role in choosing, achieving, and demonstrating competency in their learning goals. For a practical learning activity related to the example.  I imagine a project for middle school students focused on environmental science. Students could research local environmental issues, such as air pollution or waste management, using various online resources and databases. They would then create a digita...
